Mya Takes Fans Through a Time Capsule of Her Career at Mohegan Sun

If you grew up listening to music in the late ’90s and 2000s, Mya’s concert at Mohegan Sun was about to take you WAY back!

We had the chance to see Mya perform at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, and for 75 minutes, it honestly felt like we had stepped into a time capsule.

Mya brought us back to what I still think was one of the BEST times in music, 90’s – 2000’s!

The songs. The memories. The music we used to blast on the radio, play over and over again on our CDs, and sing along to with our friends.

And let’s be real… some of Mya’s lyrics DEFINITELY made their way into our AIM away messages. 

If you grew up in the 2000’s, you know exactly what I’m talking about! Between AIM away messages, carefully chosen screen names, burned CDs and waiting for your favorite music video to come on MTV, music was such a huge part of that era.

And Mya was part of the soundtrack.

For me, her music also brings back some very personal memories.

Growing up, I spent a lot of time in and out of hospitals, and I used to bring my Mya CD with me whenever I had to stay in the hospital. Music was something familiar I could bring along with me, and those songs became attached to so many memories and different times in my life.

So standing there all these years later and hearing some of those same songs performed LIVE was pretty surreal.

Music has a funny way of doing that. You can hear the first few seconds of a song you haven’t listened to in years, and suddenly you’re right back where you were when you first loved it.

That’s exactly what this concert felt like.

But what I loved about the show was that Mya didn’t only take us back. She took us through her entire career… From the songs so many of us grew up listening to, to the music she is creating today.

It really was a musical TIME CAPSULE.

And let me tell you… this woman can put on a SHOW!

The energy, the dancing, the vocals… she poured her heart and soul into this performance, and you could feel it.

Mya has released 10 albums throughout her career, and hearing music from so many different eras really makes you realize just how much she has given us over the years.

She performed so many of the songs we know and love, including “House Party,” “The Case of the Ex,” “Lady Marmalade,” “ASAP,” “Ghetto Supastar,” “Take Me There,” and of course, “My Love Is Like…Wo.”

Hearing those songs live brought back SO many memories.

For a little while, Mya made it feel like the 2000’s never ended, and LaLa and I loved every second of it!

Mya and her dancers were incredible! The choreography and energy were nonstop throughout the entire show. 

She can sing. She can dance. She can entertain.

She really is the whole package.

Mya also had several costume changes throughout the night, but what made them even more special was knowing that she actually designed them herself!

When we interviewed Mya before the concert, she told us that the designs started as her own drawings. So after hearing her explain the creative process and then seeing those designs come to life on stage, we appreciated them that much more.

You can tell how involved she is in every part of her show. From the music and choreography to the costumes and overall performance, everything felt authentically Mya.

And as amazing as she was on stage, another thing I loved about the night was watching the crowd.

The energy inside Mohegan Sun just kept building as the show went on. Fans were singing along, dancing and going WILD every time another favorite song started.

You could look around the room and see people reliving their own memories through her music.

By the end of the night, pretty much everyone was on their feet.

And then Mya turned the finale into one big celebration!

She asked who in the audience was celebrating a birthday and gave a special shoutout to all of the Leo’s in the crowd. She even invited some fans  up on stage to celebrate with her.

It didn’t matter who you came with or who was sitting next to you. By the end of the night, we were all just there singing the same songs, dancing together and having the BEST time.

After the show, we also had the chance to spend some time with Mya, and I have to say, she is truly one of the sweetest and most genuine artists we have ever interviewed and met.

She took the time to talk with us and even apologized to me for not performing one of my favorite songs, “Just Call My Name.” Because the show started late, her set had to be shortened and she wasn’t able to perform everything she originally planned.

The fact that she remembered that was my favorite song and actually apologized for not being able to sing it meant so much to me.

After 10 albums and decades in the music industry, Mya reminded everyone that night exactly why her music has stood the test of time.

For those of us who grew up listening to her, this concert was about so much more than hearing our favorite songs live. It was about the memories attached to those songs and getting to relive a little piece of the 2000’s all over again.
